Guidelines For Taking Photos

High Resolution:

Most phones today have excellent cameras. Some phone cameras are set to a lower resolution. Check to make sure it is set to the highest resolution for these photos.

No Flash:

Flash distorts the coloring of a photo and reduces detail. Please avoid using flash.

Lighting:

Photos taken in natural daylight with the sun behind you are best. For indoor pets, it helps to take the photo near a window.

Eye Level:

Photos taken at eye level with your horse or pet are best for portraits. Try to have the animal looking past your shoulder or directly at you. For horses, profiles or partial profiles are more flattering than face-on photos.

Close-up:

It helps to have the subject fill the viewing area of the camera so that I can see the details. Try to keep important features, such as ears, in the frame.

File Size:

Send the original photo file size. Reducing the file size usually results in detail being lost.

Email Multiple Photos:

I prefer to reference several photos for a portrait. One will be the basis for the portrait. The others are referenced for color variations and coat patterns that may be in the shadows in the main photo.

Artist Statement

I’ve always had a passion for drawing and painting animals. When I began volunteering at a horse rescue several years ago, I found my niche. The grace, beauty and quiet nature of the horses captivated me. Since then, the majority of my artwork features horses. In each portrait and painting, I work hard to make sure the portrait captures the spirit and likeness of the horse or animal. It is important to me to capture the unique features of each creature and I try to be as exact as possible in portraying the hues in highlights and shadows.  Rest assured that I put every effort into creating an artwork that you will cherish.
